The two sidesreached important consensus on working together to build a new model ofmajor-country relations between China and the United States. At the heart ofthis new model of major-country relationship is no conflict or confrontation,mutual respect and win-win cooperation. This is the common direction the two sides have set. It is a positive strategic outlook the twocountries show to the world and a solemn commitment we’ve made to theinternational community.

Our experience and lessons of the past 35 yearscome down to one point, that is, we need to respect each other.

如果把构建中美新型大国关系比作建造一座大厦，那么相互尊重就是这座大厦的地基。我想只要我们双方真正做到尊重彼此的主权和领土完整，尊重彼此的社会制度和发展道路，尊重彼此的核心利益和重大关切，这个地基就一定能打得牢，就能抵御风吹雨打，真正建成一座合作共赢的宏伟大厦，不仅惠及中美，也会造福世界。

建造一座大厦。动词可不译。一方面的翻译省略的处理，另外是在口译时，不记录动词，于是直接出现名词。

If one compares the newmodel of major-country relations between China and the United States to abuilding, then mutual respect is the foundation of that building. I believewhen the two sides truly respect each other’s sovereignty and territorialintegrity, social system and development path, and core interests and majorconcerns, the foundation will be a solid one that can withstand storms andtruly grow into an edifice of win-win cooperation. That will not just benefitChina and the United States but also the whole world.
